SURVPOOL: A Consortium on Risk Factors and Cancer Survival

The objective of the SURVPOOL project (A Consortium on Risk Factors and Cancer Survival) is to build a consortium of cohort studies with the aim of exploring the role of lifetime exposure to modifiable risk factors, such as obesity, in cancer survival. This project will expand the evaluation of known cancer risk factors beyond considerations of causes of cancer into prognosis after cancer diagnosis.

Overweight/obesity and cancer

As the ongoing obesity epidemic continues to worsen worldwide, insights into the relation between cancer survival and cumulative exposure to overweight and obesity have become vital for the planning and implementation of effective treatment and follow-up strategies. The purpose of this SURVPOOL project is to assess the effect of lifetime overweight and obesity on the occurrence of and patients’ survival with breast and colorectal cancers, using data collected from large cohort studies by means of an international pooling project.

This SURVPOOL project has two main goals:

  1. to provide new insights into the role of lifetime overweight and obesity in relation to cancer outcomes; and
  2. to establish a platform that will facilitate future research on the effect of other lifestyle exposures on cancer risk and survival, based on pooled data from all over the world

This SURVPOOL project was launched in April 2017 and will reach completion by the end of March 2020.
