SURVCAN-3 (Cancer Survival in Countries in Transition) is the third initiative to produce reliable and comparable survival statistics for countries in transition, expanding the coverage area of previous projects. In addition to providing survival estimates for benchmarking purposes in countries in transition, SURVCAN-3 aims to enhance registries’ expertise in collecting the local data needed to participate in this project, as well as to support the local capacity to perform survival analyses in the registries.

The SURVCAN-3 project launched in September 2016. As of March 2019, more than 84 registries in 37 countries have agreed to participate in SURVCAN-3. The project will reach completion by 30 April 2021.

• A new article by Koch A. et al. “Improving Data Validity at Population-Based Cancer Registry through Trace-Back of Death Certificates: A Concrete Experience in Argentina” has recently been published in the Journal of Registry Management.
  The article relates a real-world experience of the implementation of the trace-back procedure as described in the SurvCan-3 project for 3 poor prognosis cancers (liver, lung, and stomach) in the Population-based cancer registries of Mendoza (Argentina).

"The world cancer patient population (WCPP): An updated standard for international comparisons of population-based survival" has recently been published in Cancer Epidemiology. The article provides a contemporary and global means to estimate age-standardised survival for international benchmarking purposes.
