SURVCAN: Cancer Survival in Countries in Transition

Cancer survival is a key indicator of the effectiveness of cancer services and is a measure of prognosis that can reflect the prospects of clinical cure.

However, survival studies remain sparse in many transitioning countries, due in large part to the absence of complete or accurate national mortality information systems.

Thus, to ensure the continued development of cancer survival statistics for benchmarking purposes in transitioning countries and to support registries in developing their own capacity to collect and analyse such data, IARC is launching the SURVCAN-3 project.

The publication resulting from the SURVCAN-3 project will be the third volume of the landmark series benchmarking cancer survival in countries in transition in Africa, the Asia-Pacific, the Caribbean, and South and Central America. The project maintains the same principles as the first two volumes and represents a partnership with the International Association of Cancer Registries (IACR) and the IARC Regional Hubs.

The SURVCAN-3 project has been approved by the IARC Ethics Committee.

OBJECTIVES:

SURVCAN-3 will provide survival estimates for all cancer sites across at least 50 cancer registries.

The key objectives of the SURVCAN-3 project are:

1. To ensure the continued development of cancer survival statistics for benchmarking purposes in transitioning countries

2. To support registries in developing their own capacity to collect and analyse survival data

CALL FOR DATA:

The SURVCAN-3 call for data was launched in September 2016 and can be viewed here.

PREVIOUS VOLUMES:

The SURVCAN initiative seeks to provide systematic, comparative survival data from population-based cancer registries in developing countries. In doing so, it provides not only a context in which to compare the results obtained in developing countries with those from developed countries, but also to investigate deficiencies in cancer registration, clinical follow-up, and health services planning, organization, and delivery. SURVCAN provides important information to public health authorities from all countries on policies and investments in order to ensure improved and equitable cancer care.
